Welcome to the Community of Reason!
John Kurman, Community Activist and Writer
Most people assume that saving the world means “giving things up”,
that we in the industrialized world will altruistically have to sacrifice a
way of life that is making us happy to end the world‘s destruction. But,
what if we learned that our way of life is not only wrecking the world
but ruining our lives? Join us in exploring what hedonic psychology -
the study of human happiness - and our own experiences tell
us about this vital question.

Our Bylaws set out our purpose as follows: "The group is an educational organization created to foster a community dedicated to improving the human condition through rational inquiry and creative thinking ... It operates in an open, democratic manner, without discrimination with respect to age, disability, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, race or sexual orientation. It works in coalition with other organizations when joint action is needed to achieve its goals."
The Community of Reason has several activities. Speakers or panels present talks on various subjects every Sunday at 1:00 PM in Haag Hall 301 at UMKC. The presentation is typically followed by vigorous discussions. Every third Sunday there is a bible discussion group that meets in Haag Hall 307 at 11:00 AM. Also there are occasional potluck suppers and field trips, for example to Powell gardens or to the Kansas city Zoo. Topics at the 1:00 PM Sunday meeting have included (among others): The Scofield Bible, the reconstruction of Iraq, intelligent design, Thomas Frank‘s book What‘s the Matter with Kansas?, women in art, Lincoln‘s religious beliefs, evolution, the 9/11 attack, Iran, Israeli settlements in Palestine, free thought in Germany, the war against drugs, missile defense, molecular biology, sustainable architecture, global climate change. There have been more than one presentation on some of these topics. Speakers and panelists have included lay preachers, elected officials, authors, political candidates, academicians (from literature, biology, physics, chemistry, economics, history, political science), community activists, representatives of the Muslim Students Association, retired police officers, financial consultants and others. The members of Community of Reason welcome everyone to participate in these activities. Membership in the organization is not a requirement for participation. There is no required theological or political creed associated with membership. The activities of Community of Reason are open to the public. In furtherance of our goals and to encourage free thinking, we have weekly programs covering a wide variety of topics, maintain this web site, sponsor an online bulletin board and have other activities.
